LDT has been asked to announce to all residents that new Medicare cards will begin to appear in mailboxes to all people with Medicare beginning in April, 2018. The new cards will have a new, unique, randomized Medicare Number on them for better identity protection. Social Security numbers will no longer be on the card. PA Medicare residents will be among the first to receive the new card and new cards are scheduled to arrive between April and June, 2018. Medicare members in the same geographical area may not receive the new card at the same time as a spouse, neighbor or friend. The new Medicare cards will be mailed automatically and at NO COST.
If a resident has a Medicare Advantage Plan they should keep their plan's ID card and continue to use it for their care.
Once the new card is received, please be sure to:
1. Destroy the old Medicare card.
2. Use the new card as soon as it is received. All health care providers have been notified of this upcoming change and will be ready to accept the new card.
3. Beware of anyone contacting you by phone or mail, offering to get a new card to you sooner for a fee, or asking for your Medicare/Social Security number or other personal information. Protect the new Medicare card with the new number as you protected the old card.
If a new card is not received by April, 2019 – contact Medicare at 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227). TTY users can call 1-877-486-2048.
